Costa Book of The Year

The Shock of The Fall by Nathan Filer has been awarded the Costa Book of the Year Award.

Many congratulations for winning the award. I read this back in October 2012 and really enjoyed it.
Here is my review as posted on GoodReads way back then......

'Reading this brought to mind Grace Williams Says it Loud, as well as the more obvious Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, partly due to the subject matter and partly due to the manner in which the story unfolds through the eyes of a central character who is dealing with mental illness. The Shock of the Fall covers the onset of mental illness and the experiences of the mental health system in the Uk with a frankness and grace that are touching to read. There are many issues within the story that are only partially explored as we can only see them in as far as they directly impact upon Matt and his delicate mental state. I can see why there was a bidding war surrounding this debut novel and have every expectation that it will do well once it is released next year. It convincingly manages to maintain a quirky and yet authentic voice throughout. I will be interested to see the illustrations and inserts that will accompany the completed work.'

Waterstones Book of the Year 2013

The choice is Stoner by John L Williams

http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/products/john+l-+williams/john+mcgahern/stoner/8777459/
.
"Stoner, a quietly brilliant novel by the late American writer John L. Williams which emerged from its relative obscurity to become one of the surprise bestellers of 2013 and is now hailed as a modern classic of American fiction, is the Waterstones Book of the Year.

Waterstones Managing Director James Daunt said: "This year, most unusually, it was a nigh-on 50 year old book that ignited our booksellers' passion. It is incredible that Stoner had effectively disappeared and wonderful that a wave of recommendation and word of mouth has seen this exhilarating novel sweep all before it in 2013."

Elsewhere on the Web, there are some interesting reviews of the novel, an especially funny one can be found here, however thanks to the exposure given by Waterstones this year it has become a best seller so probably one we should all read.
